New ‘PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature’

PEN America has announced a new (or at least revised-in-new-form) US$50,000 author prize that emphatically looks beyond only the American, as it will be awarded to: ‘a writer born or residing outside the United States for an outstanding body of work over a sustained career’

This is an interesting limitation. In it’s previous incarnation, as the PEN/Nabokov Award for Fiction (awarded biennially, 2000-2008) three of the five winners were American (William Gass, Cynthia Ozick, and Philip Roth), and none of these authors are eligible for the new version.

It certainly sounds like a good way of bringing foreign writers to the attention of American readers.
