Literary prizes – and Nobel countdown

The Nobel Prize in Literature is always announced on a Thursday in October, and in recent years they’ve neatly slotted it in during Nobel week, when the other major prizes are announced (the Thursday conveniently held open for them). Not so this year: as they’ve (surprisingly) announced, they’re going to wait until the 13th this year. (Surprisingly, because they usually don’t announce such delays; one would have expected them to just remain silent on Monday (as traditionally they announce on the Monday of the week they plan to announce the prize that … they plan to announce the prize; silence would have automatically signalled: not this week, wait until next).)

Meanwhile, literary prize season continues to build up, with the latest US shortlist announcement coming from the American Literary Translators Association, who have announced their poetry and prose shortlists.
