2020 translations

At the World Literature Today blog they now have their annual feature of the 75 Notable Translations of 2020, a useful overview of many (though far from all !) of the new and significant translations published this year — very useful if you’re looking for newer works that you won’t (yet) find in the CR Guide !

There are at least two other notable titles not listed here that I would definitely include in any updated version of the CR Guide:

  • Suon Sorin’s A New Sun Rises Over the Old Land, a rare example of Cambodian fiction. (This translation was originally published in 2019, but it wasn’t included on the WLT 2019 list either, and it was only released in the US/UK in 2020).
  • Paek Nam-nyong’s Friend, a rare example of fiction from North Korea, of which there is also far too little availabe in English.

(A few other notable 2020 translations not on the WLT list but under review at the complete review I’d mention are: Alberts Bels’ Insomnia (though of course Bels already was mentioned in the CR Guide) and The Eighth Life (for Brilka) by Nino Haratischvili.)
